After watching several urethane cement videos on coating bare concrete walk in cooler floors and elsewhere, I notice that no primer has been applied before trowel down applications of urethane cement. Please explain.
You notice no primer is being applied because urethane cement systems don’t use primers. They don’t need a primer. This is an outstanding feature of cement urethane technology. These products have great flow characteristics, great penetration and a tenacious bond to concrete.
But primers are not needed generally speaking, with urethane cement trowel applied systems, because of the flow characteristics and the tenacious bond that they provide the installer.
With urethane cements, a primer is not needed because the urethane system is cement based. It’s part of the same cement family as is concrete so there is a degree of compatibility between them.
They possess very similar movement characteristics during expansion and contraction so they tend to move with each other. For this reason, a primer is not usually necessary.
Epoxy mortar applications need a primer
Epoxy mortars need a primer applied first. Some installers do not apply a primer but it’s always prudent to apply a primer to creating a better bond for the epoxy coating system being applied. Epoxy coatings do not have the elasticity of urethane cements and tend to be brittle by nature.
Therefore, when concrete slabs move, the epoxy mortars do not move with the slab so a primer would insure a better bond when movement occurs. Traditionally, primers are applied first and then the epoxy mortar is trowel applied into the primer while it is still wet or soon thereafter.
