Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Epoxy Floor Coatings in High-Traffic Areas

Step 1: Surface Preparation:

  • Cleaning: Thoroughly remove all debris, grease, and contaminants from the concrete floor to ensure optimal adhesion.
  • Repairs: Address any cracks or surface imperfections to create a smooth and stable base for the coating system.

Step 2: Application of Water-Based Epoxy Sealer (TIGERSKIN™):

  • Mixing: Prepare the TIGERSKIN™ epoxy sealer rccording to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Application: Using a 3/8" hair nap roller, apply Tigerskin™ at a thickness of 3 mils, ensuring even coverage across the entire floor surface.
  • Curing: Allow the sealer to cure as per the recommended time to establish a strong bonding surface for subsequent layers.

Step 3: Application of High-Build Epoxy Coats (TIGERBOND™ 221 ULTRA):

  • First Coat:
    • Mixing: Combine the components of TIGERBOND™ 221 ULTRA to achieve a uniform consistency.
    • Application: Use a flat squeegee followed by a 1/4" hair nap roller to apply the first coat at a thickness of 16 mils.
    • Broadcasting Aggregate: While the first coat is still wet, broadcast GARON GRIT™ 30 aggregate at a rate of 0.5 lbs per sq ft to enhance slip resistance.
  • Second Coat:
    • Timing: After the first coat has tacked off (approximately 8 hours), apply the second coat of TIGERBOND™ 221 ULTRA using the same method as the first.
    • Curing: Allow the second coat to cure thoroughly, ensuring a durable and seamless floor surface.

Step 4: Optional Application of Urethane Topcoat (HI-GLOSS™):

  • Purpose: Applying HI-GLOSS™ provides an additional layer of protection, enhancing the floor's resistance to wear and further improving slip resistance.
  • Application: Using a 3/8" hair nap roller, apply the HI-GLOSS™ topcoat evenly across the floor.
  • Curing: Allow the topcoat to cure as per the manufacturer's guidelines before allowing foot traffic.

Key Considerations:

  • Slip Resistance: Incorporating GARON GRIT™ 30 aggregate into the coating system significantly enhances traction, reducing the risk of slips and falls, especially in wet conditions.
