Transforming Military Aircraft Hangar Floors: A Step-by-Step Guide
Military aircraft hangars demand durable, high-performance flooring systems to withstand heavy traffic and chemical exposure. Here's a detailed look at how the National Guard's 183rd Fighter Wing revitalized their 20,000 sq. ft. maintenance hangar using Garon Products' advanced flooring solutions.
Preparation: Laying the Foundation
Before applying any coatings, the existing concrete floor was thoroughly cleaned and repaired. The in-house crew addressed surface imperfections and filled joints using JOINT GUARD™. This step ensured a smooth, stable base for the subsequent layers.
Step 1: Applying the Epoxy Base Coat
The team applied TIGERBOND™ 221 ULTRA, a high-build, 100% solids epoxy, using a squeegee followed by a roller. This two-coat floor coating provided a seamless, durable foundation capable of withstanding the rigors of aircraft maintenance.
Step 2: Enhancing Traction with a Urethane Topcoat
To improve safety and durability, a layer of HI-GLOSS™ urethane topcoat was applied. A light broadcast of Garon Grit 60 aggregate was then embedded into the surface, enhancing traction and meeting ADA and OSHA standards for slip resistance.
Step 3: Final Touches & Maintenance
The completed floor not only enhanced the hangar's aesthetic but also simplified maintenance. The white finish reflects light, contributing to a brighter workspace and reinforcing the unit's commitment to cleanliness.
Elevating Standards with In-House Expertise
This project exemplifies how military units can achieve high-quality flooring solutions by leveraging in-house skills and manufacturer support. The successful application of Garon Products' concrete floor coating demonstrates a cost-effective approach to maintaining facilities that support critical operations.
