Floor Coatings For Fish Production Rooms

A constant 36°F ambient floor and room temperature coupled with multiple daily hot wash downs using 300° F concrete steam cleaning with water blasters were only a couple of the challenges in terms of a material specification for seamless floors.

Proper floor drainage was a key requirement on this project as the owner previously experienced water ponding and puddling throughout the fish processing plant floors.

Properly pitching the new fish processing flooring to the drains was extremely important in order to eradicate these issues.

Since this seamless flooring project was a flooring phase in a partial shutdown section of a full plant operation, fish processing had to continue in adjacent areas.

Materials specified could have zero odor, zero VOC’s and be non-tainting to fish being processed during the flooring installation.

The concrete floor repair and resurfacing project completion was another hurdle. The timing of this floor coating completion was going to be a gain or a loss of revenue for the owners.

Suffice it to say, whatever resinous flooring material was going to be specified and installed, (and epoxy flooring was not even a consideration as epoxy floors can not handle thermal shock) it had to be a material operating within a 36 hour start to finished cure time.

As a seafood processor, it not only had to be able to withstand extreme thermal cycles and the fish industry also has to be compliant with USDA, FDA, OSHA and ADA regulations.

Fish processing is highly regulated. Fish products not processed compliantly can make people sick and even kill them. When these incidents occur, it hits hard across all lines including the sick, the processing plant and the seafood industry at large.

Regulatory compliance is always a challenge and an ongoing pursuit of forward thinking leading most owners in the food industry to the cutting edge of technology.

The salmon processing room floor received an application of urethane cement [Garon’s Mortarthane™ HF], at a minimum 1/4” nominal thickness.

Urethane cement rather than a cheaper epoxy mortar system was chosen for its ability to withstand the radical thermal shock of hot and cold which included constant 300°F steam power cleaning of 36 °F floors.

The salmon processing plant owners were pleased that they had a choice in picking the final finished texture of the urethane cement mortar as this newly completed floor included Garon’s Mortarthane™ HF Top Coat that gave the traction enhancement they required.

This installation of a cement based urethane flooring system resulted in a puddle free floor with less chance for bacteria to harbor and gave the employees a workplace environment that was safe and sure-footed to walk on every day as the Mortarthane™ HF installed flooring system registered well over the 0.6 COF ADA requirement.
