Resinous flooring [Mortarthane™ HF] was specified to resist extremely hot water used to produce its flavorings, hot steam created in the process, and repeated exposure to hot steam power washing.

A nonslip surface was also essential since employees would be working in close proximity to the hot vessels. The urethane mortar [Mortarthane™ HF] is a great anti slip floor coating, especially in continuously wet environments such as this.

Additionally, the production, dry storage, staging and batching room areas exhibited control joint deterioration, concrete cracks, defects, holes and depressions and airborne dust from the concrete slab. The control joints were filled in with a flexible epoxy joint filler [Joint Guard™].

An epoxy floor coating [Tigerskin™] was applied in the dry storage areas to keep dust down and provide an easy to maintain floor surface.

Frequently asked questions about non-slip flooring for industrial floors…

At the outset, it’s a good idea to identify the terms non-slip floor coating, anti-slip floor coating and slip resistant floor coating.

These terms may mean different things to different people and are not definitive to any degree but convey a desired concept; make the flooring surface “more slip resistant”.

So when using these terms, in no way shape or form is there an implication that the coatings will prevent slipping and falling. No coating can prevent slipping, but there are coatings that offer varying degrees of slip resistance protection where slipping hazards exist.

One of the primary concerns a facility manager or owner is to prevent slipping and falling accidents and in so doing demonstrate their concern for employee safety.

While walking surfaces for ordinary pedestrian traffic is governed by OSHA regulations that call for a surface co-efficient of friction equal to or greater than .5.

These same OSHA guide lines pertain to flooring areas that are wet due to water or other liquid spillage. These areas will need special consideration.

The selection of slip resistant coatings or non-skid floor coatings that meet OSHA standards must also be easily cleanable, particularly in food manufacturing and food service environments.

Some of these environments utilize water wash downs that can easily clean slip resistant surfaces. However, complaints that mops are shredded by aggregates in slip resistant coatings create a problem for cleaning crews who find that productivity is reduced and equipment is damaged prematurely by some industrial non-slip floor coatings whose aggregate is too aggressive.

The facility manager, after consulting the non- slip coating manufacturer, would be wise to request test areas be installed prior to the commencement of any epoxy non slip floor coating installation.

Specify a few or more test strips of anti-slip concrete coatings material be applied so that they can be evaluated for cleaning ease. Put each area to the test and make sure the test is placed adjacent to the area in question so that the exact cleaning process can be duplicated.

The owner will have several choices. In some cases it is not possible to achieve a completely satisfactory solution and a trade-off will have to be made.

Trouble begins when this step is skipped in haste in an effort to begin and finish a flooring installation. Remember, it is the responsibility of the property manager or owner to specify the degree of slip resistance required; not the contractor’s.

Pay attention to handicap ramp coatings and a slip protection coating over tile in public areas such as restrooms.

Non-skid tile coating is often an integral part of tile designed for slip resistance but, like anything else, can become worn and in need of regular maintenance.

The pennies that an application of slip protection surfacing costs is well worth the expense to save someone from injuring themselves and the avoidance of slip and fall injury lawsuits.
